After a day or two I've had a chance to start some army theory and work up a 1750 list that I'll probably play around with until I get a better feel for this codex. The over all changes to the book weren't much but they have a huge impact on the kind of lists you can make all the same. Anti-air is much harder, especially for mechanized armies, and the Tank Commander has to deal with the huge weakness of being in a squadron. What really surprised me was that my final list featured one of my favorite IG units!

The Plan - Fairly standardized mech list. The Primaris can be the warlord because I have no CCSs or Lord Commissars, plus his Ld9 is higher than Pask's Ld-. This makes me feel better about the vulnerability of tank commanders as warlords and is probably something I'll do a lot. He'll probably start most games outside of him Chimera so that he can Prescience the Vanquishers or Executioner (maybe the Sentinels even, who knows?)
I went with two Vanquishers in the command unit because I didn't want to risk failing a Ld9 roll and two different Russ suddenly having the same target (and likely different strengths.) Now I can also put the other orders to good use, especially Strike and Shroud to protect from oncoming flyers or any other threat. If I don't have a target that really justifies two Vanquishers targeting it, then I'll use the orders. I'm really thinking that doubling up the same Russ for Tank Commanders is the way to go.
Chimeras operate as fire support, mobility for infantry squads, and pill boxes if the enemy list is packing some serious firepower. I, for one, actually like the new Lasgun Array rules and would have willingly traded the firepoints for them. The ratling cost increase hurts.
The Executioner getting hot hurts but it still packs a wallop and I'm willing to risk it. If I seriously need the accuracy I'll make sure my Primaris can Prescience him to help negative getting hot. The Exterminator is just too cheap to not love and can pull double duty helping with flyers since the Hydras are kinda alone. I hate the hydras but Vendettas are too expensive for me and IG has little to no other reliable anti-air.
The Sentinels are there to be a threat to some enemies. They can't entirely be ignored but aren't issue #1 for most enemies. I'm hoping the annoyance factor will get some enemies to focus on them instead of something more important. They'll help vs. Monstrous Creatures. Plus, in a pinch, they do have a 1/3 chance, together, to tag a flyer.
Kinda feels naked with only four Russ (in three units) but the ten AV12 vehicles helps to numb that a bit. 2k is probably where it will get real fun.
Thoughts?
I dont think the Primaris psykers can be the warlord... He doesnt count towards your HQ slot.
ReplyDeletePask I hear is great on a punisher with rending.
Why the exterminator? though, seems a bit underwhelming compared to 2 Taurox with twin linked auto cannons or something.
Other than that I think the chimeras and sentinels combined with hatch lascannons will do pretty well.
